Sleep surgery is a set of surgical procedures intended to treat sleep-disordered breathing, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), improving sleep quality and overall health. Dr. Patricia Pareja, a specialist in otorhinolaryngology and facial surgery, offers a variety of advanced surgical techniques to ensure effective and personalized results for each patient.

Sleep surgery includes several procedures that aim to remove or reduce obstructions in the upper airways, which can cause sleep apnea and other breathing problems during sleep. These obstructions may be located in the nose, soft palate, tongue, or throat.
Initial Consultation During the initial consultation, Dr. Pareja will evaluate the patient’s symptoms, her medical history, and the results of sleep studies (such as polysomnography). Possible outcomes and available surgical options will be discussed. Dr. Pareja may also use physical examinations and imaging studies to identify specific areas of obstruction.
Surgical Treatment Options
Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA):
Description: This surgery involves forward repositioning of the bones of the upper and lower jaw to expand airway space. It is one of the most effective procedures for severe apnea.
Indications: AMM is recommended for patients with multiple obstructions and severe sleep apnea who have not responded to other treatments.
Septoplasty and Turbinate Surgery:
Description: Septoplasty corrects a deviated nasal septum, while turbinate surgery reduces the size of enlarged nasal conchae. Both improve airflow through the nose.
Indications: These procedures are suitable for patients with nasal obstruction that contributes to sleep apnea.
Palate Implants:
Description: Small implants are placed in the soft palate to increase its rigidity and prevent collapse during sleep.
Indications: This technique is less invasive and suitable for mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea.
Radiofrequency of Tissues:
Description: Radiofrequency uses thermal energy to reduce the size of tissues in the soft palate, tongue, or nasal turbinates.
Indications: It is an option for patients with mild to moderate obstruction and as a complement to other surgical treatments.
Surgical Procedure Most sleep surgery procedures are performed under general anesthesia and can last between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Pareja will discuss with the patient the most appropriate specific technique and provide details about the chosen procedure.
Recovery Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed:
Hospitalization: Some procedures require a short hospital stay, while others can be performed on an outpatient basis.
Pain and Discomfort: It is common to experience pain, swelling and discomfort in the treated areas, which are managed with prescribed medications.
Rest and Activities: Rest is recommended during the first days and avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks.
Diet: A soft diet may be indicated to avoid throat irritation and facilitate recovery.
Dr. Pareja will provide detailed instructions for post-operative care and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor recovery and treatment results.
Results The results of sleep surgery may vary, but most patients experience a significant improvement in sleep quality, reduction in sleep apnea symptoms, and an improvement in their overall health. Some patients may need to combine surgery with other treatments, such as the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, for optimal results.
Risks and Complications Although sleep surgery is generally safe, there are associated risks, such as infection, bleeding, difficulty swallowing, voice changes, and, in rare cases, failure to completely resolve sleep apnea. Dr. Pareja will take all necessary precautions to minimize these risks and ensure a safe recovery.
